THE WNBA: Where nothing happens
It seems that WNBA apologists, players and coaches don’t understand how businesses work, particularly supply, demand & revenue.
In 2019, the NBA generated 8 billion in revenue. Although not chump change, the WNBA generated 60 million dollars. The WNBA distributes about 12.3 million of the 60 million dollar pie to its players, while the NBA distributes 49-51% of the revenue to players.
Why are these numbers important? Because the players complain about equal pay. WNBA players feel they’re equal to their male counterparts.
Essentially, these women want equal pay from less revenue generated, and less work. Not counting the preseason, a typical NBA season(counting a long playoff run) can be around 82-100+ games played, whereas a full WNBA season is 34 games to 50 something games, in one or two game playoff scenarios, and best of 5 playoffs series in later rounds.
Imagine you work a full time job where you work 40 hours per week, and a part timer who only works 25 hours per week, is mad at you because you make more money than them. That’s the WNBA in a nutshell. It has nothing to do with sexism. The WNBA needs to generate more money so the players can enjoy a pay increase, and the WNBA needs to stop using the NBA as a support system & prove they can prosper without pandering and shaming people who don’t enjoy or support their product. It’s really that simple. Like everything, it comes down to the dollars. And nothing is more powerful than the almighty dollar.
